Rod Serling was unquestionably one of the greatest writers television has ever known. The Twilight Zone is a classic series that paved the way for science fiction stories in the medium to be told as metaphors for current events – a gentle mirror held up to society to point out injustices and missteps, along with suggestions for corrections and paths forward. Serling’s writing resonates today just as loudly as his softly voiced presentation of them did in the show’s original network run.
Born on Christmas day, 1924, Rod served as a paratrooper in the Pacific theater during World War II, and knew the horror and futility of combat spurred by ideology; he sought a way to change minds without violence. Armed with a sharp eye for visual clarity, a keen ear for dialog, and a mind that could barely resist a twist ending that served up retribution for the wicked, his television and film works remain entertaining and relevant as we enter the dawn of his 100th year.
Monsterama can’t let 100 years of Serling pass without a celebration. In 2025, we honor the man and his works with special screenings, panel discussions, guests and colleagues coming together to pay tribute to the father of socially aware television SF. Join us for a weekend FULL of Serling. We’ll talk about the stories, the shows, the comic books, the music, and the man himself – all of the aspects of Rod’s work and life. We’ll share our love of his words, his voice, and his humanity.
We hope you’ll join us.
